Would YOU step up to help a progressive challenger to Specter?

On the very day Arlen Specter became a Democrat, he lamented that not enough right-wing Bush judges got confirmed, he opposed workers' right to organize, and he compared himself to Joe Lieberman. The DSCC and Pennsylvania Democratic Party will be supporting Specter in the primary.

If there is a potential progressive challenger to Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania, they are probably scratching their head right now asking, "Would I have any chance at all if I ran, or is the fix in?"

What can progressives to do create an environment where this person feels they can run?

Legally, we can't put money in a pot for a fictional candidate. But we can pledge now that if a real progressive steps up, we'll get their back.

So, here's a little experiment. I just created a Facebook fan page (like a Facebook group) called "I support a real progressive against Arlen Specter."

People who join are pledging to give at least $25 to a credible progressive challenger who steps up. It'll either succeed or flop -- and that will solely be determined by whether the energy is there for people to join and pass it along to their friends.

If enough folks join, media will probably pay attention -- but more important, a progressive challenger would be paying attention. If not many people join...same thing. The destiny of a "challenge Specter" movement is in your hands. And the window to make this idea credible is likely short.

So, what say you? Click here or on the image above if you want to join.

(Not on Facebook? You can sign up to support a progressive challenger here.)

Let's see what happens...

Labor

If labor is in, then we've got a shot...

And labor should be in until Arlen changes his tune on EFCA....

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don't alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

I am generally a skeptic of facebook/twitter activism (0.00 / 0)
since I have joined tons of facebook groups for or against things and they never propose to do anything concrete, and they never accomplish anything concrete.

This one proposes something concrete, so I think it is a good one to join.

The anti-Bayh group got some press (4.00 / 1)
We don't know for sure whether Evan Bayh would have been the pick, but that campaign did at least make clear that picking him would alienate the left of the party.

And these things are as much as anything about sending a message.

If challenging Specter is just about messaging (4.00 / 1)
No one will take it seriously. It's too passive and as such most people won't find it particularly inspiring, as it were.

Let's recall that the netroots pretty much put Ned Lamont in the winner's circle in the CT primary, so it can be done. I don't know if this is more doable than that, but it seems worth exploring.

If we wish to attract more people to the cause, they'll need to see a little more than that, yes?

Campaigners on the streets of PA will do that.

As I wrote previously, a "theory of change" is important in activism...and folks who don't offer one (ahem, DSCC over and over and over again) sully activism for the rest of us.

challengerers on left should continue preparing (4.00 / 2)
for a primary vote. if Specter is not making an effort to support Pres Obama's agenda, through the next months, then there should be a primary regardless of any promise Specter might have received from pres Obama or Sen Reid or Gov Rendell. This should be understood by all, especially those who might have made promises

Specter's press conference was a Lieberman love fest.. (0.00 / 0)
And he spoke more of all that he would not do.  Just last week he also joined in the "banana republic" sh**it throwing  fest.

This is the last thing the Dems need and it's only happening because Reid wants to save Bybee's ass.

Rather than throw money around on a Facebook page which doesn't hold the proper credibility, we need to have a simple but clearly identifiable Progressive website to prepare.

THERE MUST BE A PRIMARY CHALLENGER TO SPECTER.  Or Harry Reid will have an excuse to blow things..again.

Here's the link to the press conference you mention. I agree - infuriating.

No, I expressed myself poorly. (0.00 / 0)
I want to help YOU help dump Specter.
But I don't think or feel Facebook has the creds to mount a serious political and public challenge to essentially the entire inside leadership of the Democratic party and their attempts to force a Right-wing candidate down our throats.

So how about we set it up at Obama's place instead??  heh heh

And with an external link back to Open Left to collect the dollars??
A list of other top Democratic names willing to support the challenge would be helpful too.

I'm totally on board - but to ask for scarce dollars right now, before the organizational structure is formed.. kinda wobbly, yes?

Too soon, IMHO (0.00 / 0)
At the moment we should keep our options open, but I'm going to wait and see how Sen. Spector votes over the next few months.

I recall that when Sen. Ben Nighthorse-Campbell switched to R in the 1990s, we went from being a centrist to another Republican Borg Unit.  If Sen. Spector starts to like a mainline Dem, I'll give him a pass.

Don't forget (4.00 / 1)
...that the threat of a primary could move him in that direction.

PA activists need to form a group (and a bank account) that we can support (4.00 / 1)
There's more than enough lead time to create a ground game to start organizing against Specter.  Initially it could be done pretty low budget, to finance volunteer ops. Find some labor, enviro, education and other groups and put volunteers out over the summer to create the space for a progressive challenger.

If we just wait for some brave soul to step into the breech,  we'll likely be disappointed. Specter is in flux right now. He's going to lose some staff, have to hire new staff, new campaign people, new fundraisers, the works. He's going to have to return a lot of his warchest.

The time to start hitting him is this summer, when he's weakest!

I tried to sign up on your non-Facebook page but was unable to, perhaps because I didn't select to be contacted for other things.

Also, I suggest you do the same thing for a liberal challenger to Jane Harman.

Thanks.

Where did you try to sign up? If you were trying on the Facebook page I linked to, it definitely works...maybe you weren't logged into Facebook.

Too early. (4.00 / 2)
I think it's a mistake either to do what Reid is doing (Specter gets a free pass, no consequences) or to take the opposite approach and try to line up a primary challenger now.

I don't know what, if anything, Specter believes in other than his own re-election.  If we can make it clear to him that he can either go along with the Democrats' agenda, or else he gets a strong primary challenge, this will help determine how he votes.

And yes, Obama's to the right of me and most of the Open Left readership.  Anyone who obstructs even Obama's mild efforts at reform, and is from a blue state, needs to go.

So it's up to Specter: if he votes with Republicans, he's a Republican and we kick him out.

Absolutely!! (0.00 / 0)
Progressives NEED their own party, and yes I would be happy to donate to make that happen.

Both the Republican and Democratic Party are an absolute disgrace....DISGRACE!  It becomes obvious more and more with each passing day Obama (The Obama King) is nothing more than Republican-lite, and in my opinion a total fraud, along with his trusted, lapdog, Eric Holder (The Court Jester) who can't be trusted to uphold the laws and defend the Constitution!

Progressives definitely need their own party if this country is going to survive...

It's not spelled out in the body of the thread (0.00 / 0)
but I'm pretty sure he means a progessive primary challenger. In other words, a (real) Democrat.

Hell yeah. This is one battle in the war for the soul of our Party.

The Versaille contingent can tell Specter whatever they want, but they do not speak for me.
