Health Care Senate Whipping, Update

The health care fight on the public option is going well. In the Senate, two recent developments have helped turn the tide. First, with the formation of a Progressive Bloc in the Senate, the Democratic Senate leadership is now abandoning futile attempts to win Republican votes out of fear of losing progressive Democratic votes. Next, with the seating of Senator Al Franken, and putting pressure on all members to make sure that major Democratic legislation requires only 50 votes in the Senate. Great stuff!

The over 20,000 emails you have sent to your Senators asking them to state their views on a public option are having a big impact, too. As the chart in the extended entry shows, we now have public statements from 39 Senators in favor of a public option, only 11 short of the necessary 50.

Of course, just any public option is not good enough. We need a strong public option that is available on day one to all Americans, and which has bargaining power. Unfortunately, as the chart in the extended entry also shows, most Senators are still dodging on those type of specific questions on what sort of public option they support. Based on responses you have sent in, DFA, HCAN and Open Left have compiled all of the "dodge" statements that these Senators have given on the public option, which you can read here.

Let your Senators know that vague, open-ended answers may be good enough for most political news media, but it isn't good enough for their constituents. If you are from a state with a Senator or Senator who is still dodging specific on the public option, send an email telling them to clarify their position now.

We are winning this fight. We are going to win this fight. Send an email to your Senators now, and let's bring this one over the finish line.

Complete Senate targeting / whipping chart in the extended entry.

Draft text of Kennedy "HELP" bill on-line for comment (4.00 / 1)
That is, not as PDF, but as blog posts.

Have at it, health care wonks!

I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

Is there any plan to get the "unknown" on record? (0.00 / 0)
If e-mails and phone calls aren't working to get them on record, is there an alternate plan in place.

Since Schumer's slipped the August deadline... (0.00 / 0)
(here), there's time for progressives to abandon the makeshift, Rube Goldberg-esque, and "vague, open-ended " "public option" (or "plan") and start advocating for a real solution already embodied in legislation: single payer.

I am in earnest -- I will not equivocate -- I will not excuse -- I will not retreat a single inch -- AND I WILL BE HEARD.

Now that you mention it, lambert (0.00 / 0)
Dr Clark Newhall, at Health-Justice, provides a free e-fax addressed to Sens Feingold and Merkley, congratulating them on their single payer stance. It challenges them to co-sponsor Sen Sanders' bill, S.703. I sent the e-fax - which goes to a flotilla of other senators and offices - but tailored the text drastically.

Newhall goes "drama queen" in his wording sometimes and some of his subscribers can't agree to harsh wording. In the case of Feingold and Merkley, I felt their track records are such that they didn't deserve the "drubbing" that the model fax offers up.

Any donation to Health-Justice is tax deductible to the extent of the law as it is a 501(c)3 organization. The set up now includes the option to send copies to your own rep and senators. This has been added thanks to donations from users. He's a committed single payer activist so deserves our support and participation.

slight problem (0.00 / 0)
The HELP draft bill currently does not contain a public option available to all Americans. There are very big exclusions--for instance, for those who already have insurance coverage through an employer (even if it's lousy). Bleeding Heartland user ragbrai08 found other problems in the HELP bill too.

Not the public option (0.00 / 0)
The HELP bill opens the exchange to only certain segments. Within the exchange, the public option is open to all. A slight difference, but we are talking about the exchange in the HELP bill here.
