Great, just great:

The GOP-introduced resolution condemning MoveOn just passed by a huge margin, 72-25. Roughly half the Democrats in the Senate supported it.

A couple of the more interesting votes: Jim Webb, who just yesterday was a Netroots hero, voted for it, even though the last thing he needs as a military guy is cover on something like this.

Meanwhile, Hillary -- who's been under assault by Rudy for refusing to condemn MoveOn but who's also locked in a tough Dem primary -- stood her ground and voted No.

We'll have a list of Dems who backed this thing and Dems who voted against it in a bit. Stay tuned.

At least we know who our allies are. A list of Democrats who hate you is coming up soon.

I wish I could say I was surprised by Webb's vote, but I'm not.  I have been skeptical about him the whole time, and he's given me good reason since he took office. This vote is of no consequence, of course, but it does give us some idea of what our supposed Dems really stand for.  Apparently, many of them of them are still all to willing to cave in at the first sign of trouble.  Disgusting.  I haven't seen the roll call yet, but I'm guessing  Claire McCaskill voted the same way Webb did.  I'm even more disappointed in her, because I was a big fan when she was in local Kansas City politics. Maybe I'll be wrong about her.

I'm sure the presidential candidates all voted no, but I'm definitely interested in seeing the whole list.

It works for the GOP, in showing that the only Iraq amendment that Harry can pass is one condemning a bunch of activists.

And it works for Senate Dems, too: any regular hates an insurgent. And, with Dems expecting easy re-elections (those of them who are up in 08), they could reasonably see Sister Souljah-ing MoveOn right as a good move to keep out intruders into their cosy circle.

I'm well past the point where I feel discussions about candidates with supporters of other candidates are fruitful.

Personally I'm much, much more concerned at the number of netroots darlings (like McCaskill, Tester, and Webb - all of whom I gave money to last cycle) who voted yes on this amendment. I really got behind these people, gave money, encouraged other people to give, talked to my friends. It's disappointing.

We're never going to be able to influence these people unless we're in a continuous relationship with them that is grounded in clear majoritarian principles.  That was the driving logic behind my battleground district organzing strategy.  You influence these people by drawing their attention to what the folks back home are really thinking, not what the spin machine says they're thinking.

That's why I wasn't really surprised by these votes.  It's precsiely what I would expect, given that we haven't got any ongoing relationship with them.  They are completely outside our influence.  What else would you expect?

It would be nice and useful that the Senate also put forward a resolution condemning the actions of Blackwater.  If the Senate can condemn the actions of an organization like Moveon then surely they can condemn the actions of an organization like Blackwater which has put American soldiers and diplomats under great peril.

The coordinated demonization of MoveOn by the right is obviously only in the early stages.  It's going to ramp up from now until the elections next year and get more and more hysterical and shrill.  (What do you think's going to happen when MoveOn starts contributing money to candidates or running ads in their districts, now that the US Senate has gone on record calling them, basically, unamerican?)  So, one of the hugely important organizations involved in the 2006 victories is going to be crippled and rendered much less effective than it could be.  Even though its policy positions are pretty much mainstream across the board.  And even though it's genuinely a broad citizen-based organization.

Webb, Tester, and McCloskey are among those who probably wouldn't be in the Senate today if not for the millions of phone calls and on-the-ground GOTV campaigns of MoveOn, PFAW, and some unions. It just about made me throw up to cold-call for Casey from the MoveOn phone bank, but we bought into the claim that what mattered was to elect Democrats, any Democrats. Webb, Tester, and company have just proved that that's bullshit.

I regret volunteering with MoveOn (4.00 / 1)
I spent a ridiculous number of hours before the election at MoveOn's grubby office working the phone banks. As it happened, our Senate-race time was spent primarily on getting out the vote for Webb, Tester, McCaskill, and Menendez. MoveOn and a very few other organizations including some unions and probably PFAW had the means and motivation to make millions of calls before the election. A look at the call numbers and the elections results pretty conclusively shows that the Senate would still be in Republican hands if not for the agonizing on-the-ground work of MoveOn and allies. These organizations accomplished what the Democratic Party's GOTV efforts have failed to do for decades.

Now Webb, Tester, McCaskill and a bunch of other pandering cowards have paid us back the only way they know how. I feel dirty for helping sell these pieces of shit to an unsuspecting public. I wonder who they'll get to make up for their craven incompetence next November? I sure as hell won't be me. I hope it won't be MoveOn or anybody else, either. Next November should be the chance of a lifetime for the Greens or some other decent organization. Nader was absolutely right. Let the bastards bleed.

When I saw this, the first thing I thought was, why did Reid let this come up for a vote?  People introduce crazy things all the time but can't only Reid decides what gets voted on and what doesn't?

Then the answer hit me. It's the right wing's continued ability to monopolize the voice of the media, like a ventriloquist with its dummy, that is making them dance to their tune.  If Reid had not called it for a vote, the right wing could have dominated the media with the fact that he didn't call it, and there would have basically been nothing we could do about it.  They have the media in their control in a way we can't even fathom.  Reid probably saw this vote as the easiest way to get past this news story.

I have been thinking about this ever since some of the observations made by Kos and others about the fact that a small "gaff" by Kerry about troops being "stuck going to Iraq" dominated the media for days, yet a gaff by Boehner about troop deaths/injuries being a "small price" to pay did not get any attention at all.  Whatever weakness the right wing might have at this point, the ability to quickly push trivial "gotcha" type storylines out and have them dominate all news coverage is not one of them. We have nothing to compare to it or that can challenge it. 

What this whole incident says to me is that until that stranglehold is broken, or until we develop enough of a counter media, our leaders WILL CONTINUE TO BE HELD HOSTAGE by their media machine.  We just plain can't compete.

And I don't mean to let the Dem Senate totally off the hook because I think there is plenty of blame to go around as to how we got into this situation, and I think they could push these memes (like the fact that the move-on ad was factual, and that the troops are the ones who first gave him that nickname) out there with some real concerted disciplined effort.  But for whatever reason they have let us get into this situation, and they don't have that discipline.

What this also says to me is that the "fight big media" effort has to become much, much higher on the progressive list of prorities if we ever hope to do anything.

Dear Senator Feinstein,

I am deeply disappointed in your vote today to condemn MoveOn.org over its newspaper ad criticizing General David Petraeus. America is presently facing immense challenges abroad and at home, while the U.S. Senate is focused on ridiculous political resolutions instead of dealing with the problems at hand. This vote never should have made it to the Senate floor. If the U.S. Senate believes that condemning unfair political ads is appropriate, then why didn't you introduce a resolution condemning the "swift boat" ads during the 2004 election, when the patriotism and honor of one of your fellow colleges was called into question?

Obviously this was a political vote, and an incredible tactical mistake on behave of all the Democrats who voted for this nonsense. As Wesley Clark said earlier today:

"It distracted attention from focusing on the failures of the policy and let the other side play a game of personal attack again.  That's a mistake.  It distracted us from the dialogue we needed."

As Democrats, it is vitally important that we break the stereotype of a "weak" and "calculating" party. We could start by not tearing apart our allies, and calling out the Republicans when they attempt to distract Americans for the serious issues at hand. I am disappointed in your lack of leadership, lack of loyalty to progressives, and willingness to jump ship when it seems politically convenient. Democrats are better than this.
