Blue Dogs set to lose, urge other Dems to be like Blue Dogs

While there is some drama in tonight's elections--most notably in Maine and New Jersey--there is little to no drama in the two prominent campaigns featuring conservative, Blue Dog style Democrats.  In Virginia, Creigh Deeds is going to get crushed by Bob McDonnell.  In the New York 23rd congressional district special election, Bill Owens is likely to get trounced by Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman.

Even though conservative Democrats are about to lose--and lose hard--at least one Blue Dog is none the less declaring that these defeats are a sign that Democrats as a whole should act more like Blue Dogs.  Representative Jason Altmire:

Centrist Blue Dog Democrats might see their position strengthened if Democrats suffer broader electoral losses, one Blue Dog member suggested Tuesday.

Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.) argued that an election night rebuke for Democratic candidates across the nation could lead some in the party to rethink their plans on healthcare reform and other issues.

"It looks as though the anger that has been boiling up the last couple of months is going to lead to a pretty high turnout from Republicans and from people who are concerned about increased spending," Altmire said Monday evening during an appearance on Fox Business Network.

The message here is that Blue Dog losses are a sign that more Democrats should be like Blue Dogs.  Presuming that Blue Dog victories would also, in the eyes of Blue Dogs, be a sign that Democrats as a whole should be more like Blue Dogs, then really there is nothing that can happen at the ballot box that would not be a sign Democrats should be more like Blue Dogs.

In a way, this is actually perfect thinking for our current system of government.  Wall Street crashes the economy, so give more money to Wall Street.  Health insurance costs too much, so give them more customers with little competition.  Energy and agriculture conglomerates are the largest polluters in America, so construct a climate change bill that gives those conglomerates tens of billions of dollars.

Blue Dog Democrats lose, so Democrats should be more like Blue Dogs.  It all makes perfect sense, as long as your goal isn't actually for Democrats to win elections.

The Deeds loss (4.00 / 5)
should be the subject of a blog-wide post election recap tomorrow, wherein Deeds went Bluedoggy depressed Democratic turnout driving Deeds to become even more Bluedoggy to conservatives more likely to vote, driving away more Dems (and so on). http://fdlaction.firedoglake.c...

A youtube of Deeds saying he'd opt out of the public option should accompany the article.

Blue Dogs will bring the party down, and I hope for our own party civil war.

I hope this narrative finds a foothold tomorrow in the traditional media.

Someone please explain to me again (4.00 / 4)
just why these people are even Democrats anyway, if they love them their Reagan economic, military and social policies so much? If they keep acting and voting like Repubs, why do we even need them? And isn't the fact that there are now more progressives than conservatives in the party, combined with the reality that they're now too "liberal" for the GOP and thus not welcome there if they were thinking of switching parties, sufficient leverage to get them to fall in line? I mean, if we push them, where are they going to go? Eventually, they might band together with what few moderate Repubs are left to form a third party or try to mount a challenge to the wingnut wing of the GOP. But right now, that's simply not feasible. So why aren't progressives wiping the floor with their sorry asses?

To invoke and invert their favorate saying, they (progressives) HAVE the votes.

USE THEM ALREADY.

The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25)

To Be Fair (4.00 / 3)
They learned this from the GOP. Reagan made deficits explode, so elect more Republicans to bring down deficits.  Bush let 9/11, so elect more Republicans to fight terrorism.  Republicans say government can't do anything right, so turn over the government to Republicans.

Blue Dogs figure that's real smart!

"Senate passes expanded GI bill despite Bush, McCain opposition"

Blue Dogism cannot fail! (4.00 / 6)
It can only be failed by insufficient Blue Dogism.

Health care reform = Employer payroll savings = More hiring and more jobs!

Local elections in Frederick MD (4.00 / 3)

Frederick is the second- or third-largest city in Maryland, and we have mayor/city council elections today. The Dems should do well -- our mayoral candidate (Jason Judd) is an excellent pro-labor progressive, and he's run a campaign about as far removed from Deeds' as can be.

This will be my straw to grasp at tonight.

Oh, and fu#@ the blue dogs.

Altmire is a DLCer (4.00 / 1)
...as well as a Blue Dog.

It's been standard DLC spin for decades -- when a D loses, it's because their campaign was too liberal, flirted with populism, etc, and if they would just stick to DLC principles they'd win.

The DLC doesn't shrink from slamming its own members when they lose, using the same old rap, as they did with tthe all-DLC tickets Gore/Lieberman in 2000, and Kerry-Edwards in 2004.

trying to beat the GOP in a race to the bottom (4.00 / 2)
by running slightly slower than they are is a losing strategy.

The definition of insanity (0.00 / 0)
Is to keep doing the same thing, over and over, after it's been proven ineffective.

I think it was Einstein who said that.

But better.

Omg, this is so sad (0.00 / 0)
it really is.  But hopefully, the "Blue Dogs lost because they were too moderate" line will get some traction tomorrow.  Maybe on Rachel Maddow's show?

Blue Dogs and Voter Polarization (0.00 / 0)
I keep trying to understand how Blue Dogs are not caught between a rock and a hard place.  They apparently don't support Obama's and the Democratic parties objectives, but are still linked to how well the Democrats are doing, all while having to satisfy a predominately red district. I'd love to see explicit polling data on what views make those districts mostly red, and what tactics and positions Blue Dogs will take to maintain this delicate balance.

I am, of course, rather skeptical that Blue Dogs are "ideologically pure" as much as they are just bought off by K St, and use Blue Doggery as the excuse to stab their own constituents in the back.  But having data one way or another on what drives these critters would be enlightening.

Which leads to phenomenon of increasing voter polarization.  The Republican party is definitely taken a turn to the hard right, and is purging moderates.  Does the election of Obama, and the increased influence of the CPC indicate that Democrats are going left?  Certainly Dems are moving slower than Repubs, but parties not in power tend to make more dramatic changes.

Assuming this is a long term trend, what does this mean for Blue Dogs?
