Just sent out the following email to 955 Larry Kissell donors.  In 2006, these donors gave a total of $24,689.51 to Larry Kissell's campaign:

Does Larry Kissell Owe You Money?

Dear Chris Bowers,

This weekend, the House of Representatives is pushing for a vote on a health care bill that will cover 36 million currently uninsured Americans while reducing the deficit.  Right now, Democrats do not have the votes to pass this bill, and Congressman Larry Kissell has merged as a potential vote against reform.

In 2006, and possibly again in 2008, you contributed money to help elect Congressman Kissell.   With the vote expected this weekend, today is ideal for campaign contributors, like you, to contact Congresman Kissell's re-election campaign office.  Tell the campaign that, if Congressman Kissell votes against health care reform this weekend, you will be calling again on Monday to ask for your money back.

The number for the campaign office is 1-877-428-4048
The email is info@larrykissell.com

A handful of progressive members of Congress are opposing the bill because they want a stronger version, but Congressman Kissell is not one of them.

Campaigns are obligated to return donations from unhappy donors. Contact Congressman Kissell's campaign office now, and say that you want your money back if Congressman Kissell votes against health care reform this weekend:

Chris Bowers :: Does Larry Kissell Owe You Money?
Until yesterday, Congressman Kissell was not among the members targeted by the leadership during the final push for votes.  As members of Congress sometimes do, he is opportunistically taking advantage of a moment when the leadership needs votes badly.  It is an attempt to force concessions in the bill and increase personal influence.

The netroots have given Larry Kissell some awfully large carrots over the years, to the tune of $485,795.  It is time those carrots turn into sticks, and we let Congressman Kissell know that this last-minute move to further water down the health care bill in unacceptable.

We are not about piling money into the coffers of Democrats who, once in Congress, will work to water down the top domestic legislative priority of the Democratic Party. (Note: we are not going to target members, such as Eric Massa, who might vote against the bill because it isn't strong enough.)  This isn't just about increasing the number of Democrats in Congress just for the sake of it.  If the Democrats who which we fundraised aren't going to deliver on key pieces of legislation, it is time that we ask for our money back.

If my sourcing is wrong, and Congressman Kissell is still a yes, then he has nothing to worry about.  Until then, we need to let him know what is at stake.

"emerged" (4.00 / 1)
Chris--in the 5th line, you have the word "merged", I think you probably mean "emerged"...otherwise, good way to turn carrots into sticks...

apparently John Adler (D-NJ3) does (4.00 / 2)
I didn't give to Kissell, but I did to Adler. I am happy to forgive, excuse and even respect just about any compromise, but if Adler really is voting against the health care bill as one paper reports, I think it's unforgivable.

Good angle Chris (4.00 / 1)
Never thought about asking for money back if someone votes against reform.

Are they actually required by any law to return the money though?

Doesn't matter... (4.00 / 1)
If his office gets flooded with requests for refunds, they will get the message loud and clear...

REID: Voting against us was never part of our arrangement!
SPECTER: I am altering the deal! Pray I don't alter it any further!
REID: This deal keeps getting worse all the time!

what about the progressive block? (0.00 / 0)
and the 57 cpc members who signed up to vote against this bill? and the hundreds of thousands of dollars that was raised to support them?

is this all supposed to go down the memory hole now? if so, i'm going to have to go back to calling myself a liberal, the progressive brand and credibility will have been so damaged.

It's disgusting (0.00 / 0)
how that whole front seems to have caved in completely, the moment a few worthless shiny objects and a pig with the words "public opshun" spray-painted on it were dangled before them.

I guess it was all just another gutter lie, like everything else in these "politics".

Amen and pass the common sense with a spine (4.00 / 1)
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would see so many progressives shoot all these years of progressive accomplishments down in one giant capitulation by supporting this miserable excuse for health insurance reform.

Here we had sound ideas with the public opinion on our side... and we are throwing it all away. Now progressive blogs are backing huge (non progressive tax increases for rising health care costs which enrich the privateer monster making a winning battle down the road that much more difficult, and don't even kick in for years... all while proving to the people government doesn't work.

I don't know if progressives can or even should recover from this sellout.

Robust public option was and still should be the compromise.. at worst. We are not even close to that with the House bill, much less the Senate.

It's not Kissell who I am considering asking for my money back.

Also Scott Murphy... (4.00 / 2)
I know OpenLeft didn't endorse him, but he's wavering too and had lots of support from progressives...

"Campaigns are obligated to return donations from unhappy donors." (4.00 / 1)
Really?

Because I never heard from Chris Carney after my many letters, emails, and phonecalls subsequent to his 2007 Hate Crimes vote.  I think they just ignore you when you ask for a refund.

Is there an actual mechanism for seeking refunds?  I would be interested in knowing this.

It's a point. Just don't forget to tell them if they don't react... (0.00 / 0)
...they caqn forget about getting a single buck from you in the future. Always use both the stick and the carrot!

There's no obligation (0.00 / 0)
Until the local press get involved. The aim isn't really toget your money back (nice though that would be.) The aim is to create a local media shitstorm so fearsome that Kissell and co. think twice before pulling something like this again.

I contributed $1K to Obama (0.00 / 0)
can I get it back by just asking?
