( - promoted by Matt Stoller)

Hey folks - this is Adam Green with MoveOn. Chris and Matt have graciously opened up the front page of OpenLeft this Sunday morning from 10am to 11am EST for me to liveblog ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

I wanted to invite you to join me here for active discussion, and to suggest in the comments below any thoughts you have on things to look for. Be they big issues or small nuances...or questions you think should be asked to McCain...I'm all ears.

As many of you probably know, MoveOn launched a petition this week to ABC and other networks in reaction to this week's travesty of a debate. If you haven't seen it yet, it says:

"Debate moderators abuse the public trust every time they ask trivial questions about gaffes and 'gotchas' that only political insiders care about. Enough with the distractions--ABC and other networks must focus on issues that affect people's daily lives."

There was a ton of energy behind this media critique. A quarter-million people signed MoveOn's petition within 3 days -- thousands of them not prior MoveOn members. (If you haven't signed yet, click here.) And the sentiment was equally strong on many blogs, and even on the pages of the Washington Post, Editor & Publisherr, and other places.

When it comes to what questions should be asked to McCain tomorrow, I have to admit, I'm a little torn--and I'd really value other people's thoughts. (More below...)

AdamGreen :: UPDATED: Liveblogging ABC's This Week - 10 am EST Sunday on OpenLeft
I've seen a couple pieces with suggested questions for Stephanopoulos to ask McCain -- one piece on Huffington by a former student of his at Columbia (and author of the new book, The Real McCain) Cliff Schecter. The other was Friday night on Keith Olbermann.

A common theme in Cliff and Olbermann's pieces are "electability" equivalents to what ABC asked Obama and Clinton --- things which, if ABC was being even-handed, would absolutely be asked of McCain.

Case in point: McCain saying he was "honored" by the  endorsement by Pastor John Hagee, who says Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for homosexuality, Jews are to blame for anti-Semitism, and Catholicism is the "Whore of Babylon" and "a cult." And McCain's "spiritual guide" Rod Parsley, who said our nation's "divine purpose" is to see Islam "destroyed."

On the other hand, those really are not the top issues voters care about....unless the media tell them over and over again that they should care about them. Issues like Iraq, the economy, and health care are the issues that affect real people's lives. Wouldn't it be great if truly bold questions were asked to McCain on these subjects?

But then again, given Wednesday's debate, many will be watching specifically to see if ABC has one standard for Democrats and one for Republicans, right? So, long point short, in preparation for liveblogging tomorrow, I'd love to hear people's thoughts on what you'd actually like to see asked of McCain. 50-50 "electability" to substance? One or two obligatory Hagee questions, followed by a half hour of dissection on Iraq? Share your thoughts...

Oh, and in case you didn't see it, our team put together a great video encapsulating ABC's debate disaster on Wednesday. Check it out:

UPDATE:
I originally had 9am to 10am as the time. Ummm...whoops. It's 10am to 11am EST.

Questions (0.00 / 0)
First of all I want to say that I signed that petition enthusiastically as soon as it came out. Keep up the great work.

I believe substantive, truthful questions should be asked of McCain. And the reason is quite simple: We Democrats win if the election is about issues. We may lose if the questions are about lapel pins.

So I want questions that expose McCain's horrible votes (or non-votes) on the minimum wage, SCHIP, torture, social security, etc.

Asking non-substantive gotcha questions doesn't help us, IMHO.

Questions for Mc Cain (0.00 / 0)
He should be asked about drilling in the National Parks and Forests. Does he have a coal policy. Does he have an alternative fuel policy.  What are his plans to cut cabon emissions. Does he have a plan to tackle global warming?  What are his plans to protect the environment?

questions for mccain (0.00 / 0)
I would like to see McCain pressed on why Cindy's (his ex-mistress)tax returns haven't been made public. He and Hills accused Obama of being elitist, yet both are much wealthier than Obama. The way McCain got into politcs to begin with was and is elitist.

Don't forget the big hubbub .. (0.00 / 0)
that was made over Kerry's wife .. and her taxes .. and they had a daughter too .. so it is a lousy excuse for McCain

He needs to be nailed down about his campaign finances (0.00 / 0)
Specifically, his efforts to skirt (violate?) the law that bears his name.

And it seems to just get worse. WSJ: New McCain Fund Gets Around Donation Limits

He's hedging and he'll continue to hedge, hedge, hedge.  My sense is that he's counting on F.U.D. factor (how poorly the press in general seems to understand public financing) and the likelihood the FEC won't issue a ruling because it won't have a quorum anytime soon.

McCain/debate (0.00 / 0)
Last fall right after Bush vetoed the SCHIF bill, McCain said he agreed with the veto. Will he do that if he becomes president?

I too signed the petition at moveon. But without much enthusiasm because I think we're going about this the wrong way.

I think we need a petition to the Democratic party demanding (OK urging) them to not endorse any debate unless it is sponsored by the League of Women Voters. Haven't we just had enough of this BS? Here is what the LoWV said in 1988...

"The League of Women Voters is withdrawing sponsorship of the presidential debates ... because the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter. It has become clear to us that the candidates' organizations aim to add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and answers to tough questions. The League has no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public."

Sounds like they had a crystal ball doesn't it?

We know darn well no matter how many petitions get sent to the MSM they will screw us over and I think we need to get them out of the business of making money on debates, which should just be their civic duty to air.

We don't need information as much as accountability (0.00 / 0)
This isn't a question about competance. This is a question of honesty. We can forgive the absence of the former but not the absence of the latter.

Staphococcus, or whatever the hell is name is, needs to be held accountable.  We need him to treat McCain the same way he treated Obama. So, this paragraph is clearly wrong:

On the other hand, those really are not the top issues voters care about....unless the media tell them over and over again that they should care about them. Issues like Iraq, the economy, and health care are the issues that affect real people's lives. Wouldn't it be great if truly bold questions were asked to McCain on these subjects?

We can get answers to those anytime. We need Stahpowhatever to demonstrate that he is not biased (just incompetent).  Among the guestions which would help us discern this are those listed here: http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

John McCain doesn't care about Vets.

I want... (0.00 / 0)
Stephanopoulos to grill McCain on issues of economic, Iraq, and tax policy through a liberal frame, just like idiot Gibson did when asking Obama and Clinton about tax cuts, etc.

Also, I know they treated Clinton sort of badly, but can we all agree that the terrible treatment went to Obama. She got a free ride in that debate in a big way. The fact that she's celebrating it right now is sickening. Obama had to fend off Gibson, Stephanopoulos and Clinton, that wasn't a debate, it was a gang initiation. He got jumped.

I want Lil' Georgie Boy Wonder's questions (0.00 / 0)
to be entirely substantive. The problem with the questioning in the ABC debate was not just because it was an assault on the Dem candidates, and on Obama in particular, but because it was also an insult to the entire electorate, the journalistic profession and to the entire electoral process. But for some measure of fair and balanced payback, the questions should  be framed from a progressive Democratic view.

Basic Questions (0.00 / 0)
Ask McCain the questions everybody wants to know:  What will he do about the foreclosure crisis?  What will he do to invest in American jobs?  What if a Democratically controlled congress passes universal health care?  Will he veto it?  What if a Democratically controlled Congress refuses to support funding for the war?  How would he prioritize his withdrawal?  What if a Democratically controlled Congress passes funding for sex education here and internationally that included more than just information on abstinence.  Would he veto it?

Questions for Mc Cain (4.00 / 1)
McCain wants the war in Iraq to continue.  How many troops does he really think we need to have on the ground in order to "win" the war in Iraq?

The legal framework which we have to stay in Iraq expires in December 2008.  How long will he press the Iraqi government to extend our stay?

The Military experts have been pressing for a systematic withdrawal because they do not see us "winning" the occupation. They forsee a partition of Iraq to govern the three factions that have proven that they can't live together under the one government we imposed.  What is wrong in agreeing to engage Iran and work towards partition?

Why does he want to go to war with Iran.

The Taliban is back in Afghanistan and 80% of the heroin trade comes from Afghanistan after our invasion.  We do not have enough troops fighting in Afghanistan.  Since this is the place that welcomed and supported Al Queda and Osama Bin Laden, why aren't we devoting more energy and resources to Afghanistan? Is the US government supporting the drug trade?

We have given billions of dollars to Pakistan to root out and find Bin Laden.  What have gotten in return?

What are his plans for solving the Palestinian problems and securing the peace in the Middle East.

Will he talk to Cuba

What are his prescriptions on forestalling a pull out by China of continuing to subsidize our budget deficits and propping up our currency

What are his plans to prevent more banking collapse, and further meltdowns in our housing and financial markets

What are his plans to create jobs for Americans.  How can he change the tax code to encourage domestic production and service in America.

How many lobbyists does he have on his payroll.  What industries is he indebted to

Why did he say torture was wrong and against the Geneva Convention and then change his mind to support waterboarding.

In 2000, he said Bush's tax  cuts were wrong.  Why does he want them to become permanent after the disaster they have wrecked on our econmy.

What are his plans to rebuild our infrstructure

Does he believe that we need a national health insurance plan.  Why is he on Medicaid

Where are his wife's tax records, and where are his medical records

Why does he associate with Pastor Haggee, Jerry Fallwell, and other right wing evangelicas who said 911 was our punishment for our sins

What church does he actually belong to, he's been episcopalian and baptist.  Which flavor is he today

Does he also plan to govern the country as if the 30% of conservatives matter and the rest of the  country doesn't.

Is he sharing campaign tactics with Hilary Clinton since they both have campaign staffers who work for Mark Penn

Why do Republicans go out of their way to insult African American voters?  Is this his plan too?

Why is he claiming that Barack Obama supports Hamas

What are his criteria for nomination to the US Supreme Court

Will his administration work towards removing gays from the military and overturning Roe vs. Wade

Good luck tomorrow.

treat him the same (0.00 / 0)
I'd like to see him treated the same as Obama (as if). He should be tarred with guilt by association with Hagee and Parsley. He should have to explain "100 years," "Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran," "I don't know much about economics," and his confusion of Shia, Sunni, Iran, and Al Qaeda. He should have to explain why he wants to make the tax cuts that shocked his conscience when they first passed permanent. He should have to explain why his health plan would allow private insurers to deny him and Elizabeth Edwards insurance based on pre-existing conditions. He should be asked about Jerry Falwell being an "agent of intolerance" and Falwell's comments right after 9/11 blaming the attacks on America. He should be asked if he is too old to be President. He should be asked about his flip flops in immigration and torture.

W00T!!! (0.00 / 0)
Back on your heels, beyatch!!!

Plays here at 9a. Stephy hitting pretty hard, McCain sputtering.

McCain really needs to learn not to talk so much (0.00 / 0)
Too much sputtering, too much.... "Sure, sure". Sounds very weak.

Things to watch for in the commenter segment (0.00 / 0)
Really need some younger media blood out there. These ppl are lost.

Cokie said voters don't vote on issues,  they vote on "gut check". George said America is still a "center right" country,so Obama is too liberal, and my own personal favotite, Sam f'ng Donaldson said that they can't be too tough on McCain for being old 'cause they're old (paraphrase). Oy.

McCain = Conservative (0.00 / 0)
The electablity question can be made substantive:

Is he spinning himself as an independent to appear more electable? Does he think the NeoCon Republican brand is dead?

How can he claim to be independent when he stands with Bush and Right-Wingers on a number of issues?

We won the Battle. Now the Real Fight for Change Begins. Join MoveOn.org and fight for progressive change.

Adam, not only did I sign your petition, but I called... (0.00 / 0)
the president of ABC news, George and Charlie and left them voice mails on their voice mailboxes expressing my disgust in the train wreck that they are continuing to promote as a debate. I am a member of Move On and will continue to support your efforts and en devours.  Keep them honest. THe story in the times this morning only goes to show that we must remain ever watching against the establishment and their propaganda.
