Better Democrats and the 11% Congress

This Saturday, Al Wynn is having a fundraiser with a special guest of honor.

MD-04 is a 77% performing Democratic district that runs in Montgomery and Prince George's County.  It is as safe as safe can be for a Democrat.  Wynn voted for the war in Iraq, the repeal of the estate tax, was a cosponsor of the bill gutting net neutrality, the Bankruptcy Bill, and the 2005 Energy Bill.  He's really the epitome of the corrupt Democrat who gives cover to the right-wing to enact legislation.  He even voted for no-bid contracts for Federal prisons.

And the money shows it.  Here's a partial list of corporate PACs: AT&T Federal PAC, Walmart, NFIB, US Chamber of Commerce, Nuclear Energy Institute, Raytheon, Verizon, Bellsouth Federal PAC, Bechtel PAC, Comcast PAC, Constellation Energy, DTE Energy, Northrup Grumman, Entergy, Excelon, First Energy, Lockheed Martin.

The collusion of top Democratic leaders with corporate PACs is the single biggest obstacle to an effective Democratic Congress.  Remember Steve Elmendorf in 2006?

"The bloggers and online donors represent an important resource for the party, but they are not representative of the majority you need to win elections," said Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist who advised Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign. "The trick will be to harness their energy and their money without looking like you are a captive of the activist left."

Well here he is today.

The best-heeled new blue firm is Elmendorf Strategies LLC, which at present has just three registered lobbyists but has pulled down more than $2 million in business since December 2006. Some of its leading clients are UnitedHealth Group, Verizon Wireless and Coalition for Patent Fairness, a communications industry trade group specializing in intellectual-property issues.

Fortunately, we can stop this.  Progressive hero Donna Edwards nearly beat Al Wynn in 2006 as a first time candidate running an underfunded campaign, losing by just three points.  This cycle, she's going to win.  But this is not just another Congressional race, it's about what kind of party the Democrats will be in the majority.  Will we continue to knuckle under to lobbyists and the Bush administration?  Or will we stand up as proud progressives?

Color of Change, MyDD, Swing State Project, Americablog, Dailykos, Firedoglake, Atrios, Crooks and Liars, DownwithTyranny and Openleft are coming together in a special project to raise $100k for Donna Edwards for Congress.  We want to send a message to the Democratic leaders in Congress, to the corporate lobbyists, and to the Republicans that Congress belongs to the people.  Over the next four days, we're going to show you exactly who Nancy Pelosi is raising money for, and we're going to cap it off with Donna blogging at Americablog, Dailykos, and Firedoglake for Saturday afternoon during the Wynn fundraiser.

It's time that Democrats in Congress act like Democrats.  So throw in $25, $50, $100, $250, whatever you can.  It's time for some better Democrats.

Pelosi (4.00 / 3)
10 short months ago, I watched the historic vote and swearing in of USA's first female speaker of the house with pride and hope of a new America.

Now I want to kick her to the curb!

It has been a very depressing 2007 for Dems.

John McCain won't insure children

Donna is also a Blue America candidate (4.00 / 2)
So here's another giving option:

I blog at www.firedoglake.com.

I ponied up (4.00 / 1)
And some dough Chris Dodd, and for Virginia State Senate candidates Janet Oleszek and George Barker to hopefully get them across the line in tight races. Wish I could do more for them, but will be out of town tomorrow through Tuesday, so cash is all I can really do.

I am going to see about hopefully working on some GOTV/messaging for the eventual Democratic nominee in the VA-1 Special in December -- about 40% of the district is the far southern DC exurbs in Stafford/Prince William/Fredericksburg.

Matt, any events coming up for Donna that us NoVa-ites can help out with?

Cindy Sheehan (0.00 / 0)
America could survive having her serve in Congress for a term.  Would anyone really miss Pelosi?

Hoyer wouldn't miss her (0.00 / 0)
He's already giving her the shiv.

Hoyer is the one who needs the primary challenge.

Hoyer's district isn't as safe... (0.00 / 0)
...but I'd still like to see a progressive challenge him in the primary.

It's not like kissing up to national business interests helps Steny win votes in southern Maryland.

Paycheck is a little fat today (4.00 / 1)
Part of the extra goes to Donna. Part to booze, but certainly part to Donna.

John McCain opposes the GI Bill.

Today, I contributed $10 for each ... (4.00 / 1)
...Daily Kossack who also contributed $10 to Donna Edwards. $100 from me, $100 from 10 of them.

Long time reader, first time giver (4.00 / 1)
The time has come to draw a line in the sand. Either you're with us citizens or you're with the Corporate Interests looking to exploit us.

Can we PLEASE stop swinging this 11% dead cat around? (4.00 / 1)
It was an outlier--a ZOGBY poll, no less. There have been other polls in recent weeks that have congress in the 20's and even 30's. And in all of them, the Dems always have higher numbers than the Pubs. Plus, congress has ALWAYS had low poll numbers historically, and they rarely go much over the 40's. This is getting really old and boring, selectively throwing around whatever numbers appear to make one's case at the time.

Yes, congress is not popular these days, and deservedly so. And yes, Dems mostly suck, for obvious reasons. But 11% is simply not a reliable number. It's a ZOGBY poll, jeez!

The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25)

To back this up (0.00 / 0)
Look at this, this, this and this. Someone please show me where 11% appears in any of the "approve" columns. It's a great-sounding number, but unsupported by all non-Zogby polls.

We do not help our cause when we throw around bad facts.

The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself. (Proverbs 11:25)

If one was going to start a Lefty Netroots Party... (0.00 / 0)
...this would be a great district to run a candidate in, if Wynn manages to sleaze his way to another primary win.

I've been thinking that, given the number of districts where the Republican generally gets <30%, due to all the GOP gerrymandering, forming a party like that just to run in districts like this would be a smart move.
