Hillary on FISA

I have one other observation from the rally, which I wanted to put in a separate thread.  I spoke with Hillary and Bill, both for oddly long amounts of time considering the crowd, and they are obviously well-aware of the FISA fight.  I talked to Bill first, and asked him for help on the FISA fight. He very lawyerly asked me if they need 60 votes for cloture, and I said 'yes'.  He knows that this means Clinton's vote isn't necessary, since it doesn't matter if the vote total is 59-41 or 59-0.

Then I spoke with Hillary, and she said she has assured her colleagues she will go back to the Senate if they need her vote.  She though that we have already lost, alluding to the Judiciary version of the bill which was voted down on Friday.  I urged her to speak out publicly and she said she intends to say something on Sunday.

Not sure what the implications are of this since I haven't been following the FISA fight as closely as some others, but I figured it's worth passing along.

Typical Clintonian Triangulation (4.00 / 1)
"We'll vote with you, but we won't fight for you."

Why am I not surprised???

It's not like the Constitution was Walmart, or AETNA, or whatever.

"Senate passes expanded GI bill despite Bush, McCain opposition"

Less cynically perhaps (0.00 / 0)
It shows the same narrow tactical battle-by-battle approach the Clintons take, with no concept of the larger war.

It occurs to me you could compare it to vietnam, where the US wins every battle and still loses the war.

So to them, there was never 51 votes for the SJC version, and Hillary's vote doesn't matter in the cloture vote, so why bother?  Just keep campaigning.

It's narrowly true, but ignores the landscape changing impact of Hillary Clinton speaking out strongly against this.  Make it an election issue, if she tried to, she could.

Somehow the Clintons fail to get that Heisenberg applies uniquely and variably to politics:  The more a vote is observed, the more the outcome is changed.

How Hillary Fights (4.00 / 2)
"She though that we have already lost"

So with this out there, now the opportunity for someone, anyone, *cough* Barack *cough*, to seize the day and show real leadership is just waiting to be taken and run with. Instant easy distinction.

Michael Bloomberg, prince of corporate welfare

I respectfully disagree (0.00 / 0)
I think that this means that she will keep the GOP cloture vote from succeeding.  She will make a strong statement on Sunday which will be ignored as "Clinton lies" and then may show up for the vote. Even if she says that she will show up to defeat cloture if her vote is called for, that might be a strong statement. If that happens and she shows up, saves the day but Obama doesn't, it might be the ballgame.  Other blog entries seem to indicate that if the GOP cloture move fails then FISA is fucked.  Let Bush and the Rethugs claim weakness, the Dems will have held up with the people's majority opinion.

The GOP can't claim blockage because it will bring out their blockage story.

I think this is Clinton maneuvering for a potential knockout punch on the assumption that Obama's weakness is actually, you know taking action.  She also knows the Senate rules very well.

Thanks for The Update Matt (0.00 / 0)
Sounds like Hillary's following this one very closely and will be there when it counts.

One of the MANY reasons I admire and respect this woman.
