Defining McCain

A friend of mine just sent me this, which is pretty cool. This is the kind of innovative work we need- especially at the grassroots- to begin defining McCain, which I think is critical now.

For nearly 40 years I have been a campaign media consultant working exclusively for Republicans.  My first spot was created for Governor Ronald Reagan in 1970 when I founded Spencer-Roberts Advertising for Reagan's two top political gurus, Stu Spencer and Bill Roberts.  I was 23 at the time and went on to documentary filmmaking, television news, and ultimately, back to politics, working for moderate Republicans for the U.S. Senate, House, governors, mayors, and on one of the several Dole for President campaigns.

I have always taken a low, or no, profile in campaigns, as I learned long ago not to become an issue myself.  But as I approach 62, the impact of another Republican in the White House on my 9-year old daughter, my 39-year old son, and 1-year old grandson, drives me ever deeper to the radical center.

I admired and supported the John McCain of 2000, less so the John McCain of 2004.  And, now I barely know the man, who he is or what he really stands for, and against.

As my medium is visual and my message, visceral, I have produced this brief video to take you to the NoJohn website.

NoJohn.com -- where anyone and everyone can be a "political consultant."

That is fabulous! (0.00 / 0)
Even better than my preferred "John McCain--he isn't who you think he is."

What a great idea.  And thank you frined for having the brains, guts and altruism to see the light.

John McCain--He's not who you think he is.

You're a hero, but you're also a politician.

I'm not sure I'd use that in a commercial, but I think it makes for a great line on the stump or in a debate - it's a perfect transition from respecting your opponent to pointing out how their record doesn't match their rhetoric and their public image, hitting him on the economy, Keating Five, lobbyists, taxes, Iraq, choice, etc.

for the post. in the midst of so much hot temper, it's nice to see someone with reasonable thoughts, who's able to explain the genesis of his opinions.

and thanks for the video. this is spot-fucking-on.

Great video... (0.00 / 0)
and I think the "hair trigger temper" is the best way to define McCain. Too many people think McCain is best to handle the war, and we must work to make clear what a warmonger he is. I would love to here our candidates say...

"John McCain isn't the first senator from Arizona to run for president on the promise that he can blow up the world quickest."

The contrast between "then" and "now" is crucial (0.00 / 0)
The most important point made in this video is that John McCain the 2008 candidate is not John McCain the maverick/straight-shooter/etc./candidate from 2000.

Rather than saying "you were never right about McCain" to those people who profess admiration for him (and thereby turn them off), it's far better to make the argument "you were right, and you haven't changed -- but McCain has" (thereby giving them an opportunity to change their minds without losing face).

I say fund an opening salvo! (0.00 / 0)
In the same way that the blogs raised funds to go after weak Democrats just recently with robo calls, I think we should raise funds to start putting this on air now and getting a print version.

We need to target Republican strongholds--Golf Channel/ESPN, as well as places that it we might not think of like Discovery Channel, History Network.

Ads there will be cheaper--but they will stir down in the educated groups and citizens who are typically decision maker.s
