Fox News Caught Editing Al Franken's Wikipedia Entry

There's a new tool out there that lets you search the destination IP addresses for people editing wikipedia entries.  Arthur Bergman found that folks at Fox News's IP address were editing Al Franken's entry.  Apparently, Fox News propagandists deleted Franken's statement that Fox News's legal case against Franken was ""literally laughed out of court" and that "wholly (holy) without merit" is a good characterization of Fox News itself."  The Fox News users also added a 'liberal' adjective when characterizing the NPR show 'Fresh Air'.

There are two takeaways here.  One, though I'm sure that bloggers and the internet generically will somehow be blamed for vitriol and this very episode, let's remember that unethical stuff done on the internet can be done by journalists or propagandists at media organs like Fox News as easily as it can be done by bloggers.  We got a lot of shit for 'hacking' Lieberman's web site the day of the primary, simply because we write for a web-only audience.  That's beyond stupid.  And two, Fox is an advocacy organization that works against Democrats and seeks undermines legitimate news outlets.

Both of these points should be, but somehow aren't, obvious to most media executives and a whole lot of establishment people.  I write on the internet.  Boo!  Call me cyberhawk, or something.

Fox and Franken... (4.00 / 1)
I'm a big fan of Al Franken and hope he beats Norm Coleman in Minnesota Senate race.  This is a network constantly caught handing out misinformation from:

1)  O'Reilly lying about a WW II tragedy at Malmedy

http://mediamatters....

2)  Hannity pedaling the "We found weapons of mass destruction" story with Rick Santorum:

and now they're continuing their unconscienable attack on the truth.

Will MSM report on this? (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if the MSM will report this (I'm skeptical) and reach the obvious conclusion that Fox News is not an objective news source (even more skeptical)?

Who needs the MSM when (0.00 / 0)
Jon Stewart is on the job.

I don't see Daily Show writers passing up an opportunity as good as this.

Fox "News" should be banned from the Democratic Convention (0.00 / 0)
I tried to persuade Gov. Dean of this at the YearlyKos that Fox should be banned from the building but he said, and I quote, "we need to talk to their audience."

Since they're going to distort our message anyway, I didn't find this convincing, but what can you do?

We need to talk to hacks? .. and people that will never vote for us? (0.00 / 0)

Hmm (0.00 / 0)
I was there when you asked that question and was surprised by it. I don't find Fox a credible news source (duh!, but if one subscribes to the notion of a free press (and I do - and I hope the Democrats do), you don't ban any press from your convention, whether you find them credible or not.

We certainly wouldn't like the idea of the White House banning any reporters that they would think were biased against them! I remember this community being indignant at their treatment of Helen Thomas.

OTOH, we ought not to give them interviews and appear on their biased programs.

Here is "that new tool out there ...." USE it. (4.00 / 1)
HERE is "that new tool..."  The truth is out there.

USE it and learn.

Impotent Much? (0.00 / 0)
Why, if I worked for cable network, of course I'd spend my days editing people's wikipedia entries.  What could possibly be a more effective use of my time than that?

So, why not switch places, then?  Fox can use my home computer, and I'll use their studios to do useless stuff like interview Anthony Zinni all day.

"Senate passes expanded GI bill despite Bush, McCain opposition"

I was suprised that this incident wasn't (yet?) mentioned in Wikipedia entry for Fox News...

was vandalizing the wiki page of John Orman, chairman of the Connecticut for Lieberman party (the ex-party of Joe):

I, being the Secretary for the CFL party, was supremely pissed. They were vandalizing with my name using totally false information.
